FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 25,1987 a .'■I ti'lH m Day campaign totals $344,238 for Wesleyan SAGA AND WESLEYAN JOINED TOGETHER TO RENOVATE CAFETERIA INTERIOR College renovates cafeteria By MARK CRUM To the shock of most returning Wesleyan students, the cafeteria has a new look. No more cinder-block walls or protruding-nail chairs. No more discolored floor tiles or hot summer dining. The dining facility has been renovated. The idea of renovating the cafete ria got started about this time last year when Saga, the holder of Wesleyan’s food service contract, approached the college with the idea. Ray Kirkland, Vice President of Finance at N.C. Wesleyan, said the renovations planned about a year ago included total renovation of the inte rior of the cafeteria which Saga, a division of Marriott Corporation, would help out with financially. Saga also agreed to allow the college to use the expertise of their interior decorating department in planning the renovation of the cafeteria inte rior. Also included in the plan was the replacement of the air conditioning unit and repair of the roof on the Student Union Building. The planned renovation was presented in February to the Board of Trustee’s Executive Committee. Approval was given and work began as soon as school ended in May, Kirkland said. “The college served as general contractor and we had all of these subcontractors (painters, plumbers, electricians, wallpaper hangers, etc.),” Kirkland said, adding that as (Continued on Page 4) By SHARON EVANS The 1987-88 A Day For Wesleyan (ADFW) campaign has collected $344,238, surpassing the 1986-87 campaign collection of $337,000, according to Richard Dol lar, Vice President of Development of North Carolina Wesleyan College. A Day For Wesleyan is an annual fundraising campaign, that supports the school’s overall budget. This year’s campaign was successful both in terms of the money raised and the overall support of the college. ‘The success is due to the thrill, enthusiasm, and high energy level by all parties involved.” said Richard Dollar. “This new level of energy can be attributed to the fact that the vol unteers were able to see the positive changes in the campus, they saw the new cafeteria and heard the President Leslie Gamer Jr. talk.” The volunteers, over 180 this year, were invited to work in the community by the director of the campaign, Sylvia. The volunteers are coordinated into two person teams. On the actual day of ADFW, the two people meet and obtain their infor mation packets. Their next step is to go from the orientation meeting into the community and meet their pro spective list of contributors. “The volunteer teams and their lists are matched up based on some point of similarity,” said Dollar. The volunteers report in during lunch and later at a victory celebration during dinner were the overall estimate of contributions is tallied. The ADFW campaign is broken down into two sites of concentration- on campus and community. The chairperson for the on-campus cam paign was Dr. John Stevens, Chair man of the Criminal Justice Depart ment. “The on-campus drive was excel lent and very successful”, said Ste vens. The campus drive involves all three segments of campus employ ees: administrator, staff, and faculty. “Participation will probably reach 98 to 99 percent by the time all contribu tors and pledges are in”, Stevens said. This is up from last year’s 65 percent involvement. The amount pledged increased from $7,000 in the 1986 campaign to $11,300 for this year’s drive. Explaining the increase, Stevens noted, “They (campus/community) are recognizing that the college is growing and the sense of leadership (Continued on Page 4) Election cancelled Due to the fact that only one person submitted a petition to run for each Community Council position, the election that was scheduled for Tuesday last week was cancelled, Steven Cohen, Dean of Student Life, has announced. There is an increase of students with allergy problems this fall. New students who would like a particular day and time for allergy injections should contact Student Health and make the arrangements. Regular students no longer have in jury coverage from the college. The college will continue to use the Internal Medicine Center as cam pus physicians. Their office is about a five-minute drive from the college. There are seven doctors on staff, each very capable and interested in Wesleyan students. There is no charge for an office visit but students will have to pay for X-rays and lab work. The office visit fee is assumed by the college. Students who need to see a cam pus doctor should notify the campus nurse as soon as possible. Students should be sure to carry their parents’ private insurance information when them when they go.
